Go for it! Guidelines for submitting to Travel + Leisure I liked this bit....

"Please note that a place is not an idea, and that editors are looking for a compelling reason to assign an article: a specific angle, news that makes the subject fresh, a writer's enthusiasm for and familiarity with the topic."

In short, don't waste your or their time with stuff you don't know about, or can fake being excited and knowledgeable about.
